Margarito, not Mayweather

The possibilities of a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight may be getting slimmer and slimmer as time goes by despite of the hopes of the many that there will be a time that this dubbed mega-fight will take place in reality not just in our imaginations. The chances of the mega-fight is so thin especially now that Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao was elected a sit in the Philippine Congress. Also, the chance became thinner this time that Pacquiao will be facing another great boxer on the 13th of November this year, but that boxer's name is not Floyd Mayweather, Jr.

Antonio Margarito!

Yes, Antonio Margarito! The Mexican boxer who had defeated other great fighters as well. He was famous even before the illegal plaster hand-wraps issue stirred the world of boxing.

Margarito is one tough-great boxer!

What made me say that? Well, not only that he had won titles in the welterweight division but he had also fought boxers in class. Kermit Cintron, Joshua Clottey, Miguel Angel Cotto, Paul Williams and Shane Mosley; big names right?

So why Antonio Margarito? What made Top Rank's Bob Arum pick him?

Well, Arum received no response from Mayweather's camp for a contract signing that would put Pacquiao-Mayweather in the ring for good so he [Arum] had made a choice between Margarito and Miguel Cotto; later picked Antonio. Arum claimed that, though Cotto would be a good competitive opponent for Pacman, a Margarito match for the pound-for-pound king is more lucrative. Well, indeed; the fight would also be explosive and exciting for Margarito could consider this as a big break for his boxing career; he will be on top of his game to prove that he can defeat the Pacman.

This better be good.

He is still undefeated and on top of the world!

I predicted that Shane Mosley would win the fight via KO and not through the scorecards and Floyd Mayweather Jr. would win by unanimous decision and I was kinda right in there; however I picked Sugar to win.. sad.

Well, it was all Mayweather's night! The win by unanimous decision had lifted his career stats to 41W-0L-25KOs while it handed Mosley his 6th lost with 46W-39KOs. Floyd's counter punches had done more damage than the Mosley's offensive strikes. Sugar played with Mayweather's forte; it was obvious, the outcome was very predictable after the 3rd round.

Congratulations Money!

Now, hopefully, the fight that everybody would like to see Pacquiao-Mayweather. Just get it on.

Sugar or Money?

With the Mayweather-Mosley fight just few days away predictions for the fight keeps on pouring; that's normal though. Both camps even predicted a knockout victory for their own fighter.

Well, I want to share my own.. duh.

Both camps predicted a KO victory right? Well that will happen, most likely, if both will play offense like both fighters will just put it on, street-fight style (not like the past Pacquiao-Clottey fight). However, I don't think it would be a match of offense-vs-offense. Why?

Both fighters would like to win, that's an undeniable fact.

First off, Floyd Mayweather, Jr. is undefeated and he would do anything to keep his record clean from defeat; and when I say anything, that includes coming up for a random blood-test for dope - Olympic style. Floyd will play defense on May 1, that's what I think, and most of his punches will be from counter-attacks. I hope he will not stay in a 'turtle-house' defense, like Clottey did against the Pacman, for there's a chance that Shane would unleash a fury of punches that may make him a human punching-bag. Oh well. If ever 'Money' wins it would be by unanimous decision.

Shane Mosley, on the other hand, would do anything to win this fight not only to prove that he is one of the best boxers in the world but even to strengthen his credibility to be in the Hall-of-Fame of boxing. Also, I think he would like to fight the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao as well so he must win. Mosley may be 38 years old already but that doesn't mean he can't fight; he demolished Antonio Margarito the last time. He is the one I am feeling to win by KO if ever the match will not go the distance.

So, Money or Sugar? I'll go for sweetness himself, Shane Mosley.

Spotlight now is on the Mayweather-Mosley fight

2010 will definitely be a great year for boxing. With The Event just happened in Dallas, Texas where the pound-for-pound champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao became victorious once again in front of 51,000 boxing fans what's next for us to wait? Obviously the Mayweather-Mosley fight!

The undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40W-0L-25KOs) will face Sugar Shane Mosley (46W-5L-39KOs) in a welterweight bout that will surely make an impact to the boxing business. This time the spotlight will be back in Las Vegas from Dallas. There is a chance that Pacquiao will be fighting the winner of the Mayweather-Mosley fight; however, seems like the Pacman would want Mayweather more than anybody else as he had said it again during his post-fight interview against Joshua Clottey. Well, there are a lot of hopefuls.

We discussed here the last five fights of Mayweather so, next time, we'll try to review some of the last fights of Mosley.

Mayweather is upset for Pacquiao's victory!

I believe that the pound-for-pound king and WBO welterweight champion, Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao put on a good fight against Joshua Clottey during their recent fight where the Filipino pride won via a one-sided unanimous decision; the thing that made the event looks like a not-a-Pacquiao type of fight is that there was no knock-down. Seriously, a lot of people had predicted and expected that Clottey would hit the ground; it never happen. Because of this, a lot of critics are claiming that the Pacman had upset a lot of boxing fans.

Upset?

Oh c'mon! The victory itself is sweet and Pacquiao is phenomenal. Even team Clottey, I think, was not upset about the outcome of the fight; it was a privilege to fight the best boxer in the world today and make millions of dollars.

Upset? Who's upset?

There is one thing that, I think, was upset not just for the victory of Pacquiao but even with the success of The Event held in Dallas, it's Floyd Mayweather Jr. The ever boastful Floyd had talked again saying that the effect of HGH to Pacquiao is just great; Mayweather also claimed that Manny put on a boring fight. Well, I remember Mayweather Jr., days back, saying something about focusing (talking) on his next fight with Shane Mosley instead of talking about Pacquiao; he just can't stop thinking about the Pacman. He's haunted.

Well, Mayweather should do his best to win against Mosley if he wants another shot to face Pacquiao in a multi-million mega-fight. Good luck to his next bout.

Pacquiao is again victorious!

Some of my own predictions didn't happen for the fight between WBO welterweight champion and pound-for-pound superstar Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao of the Philippines against former IBF champion Joshua Clottey of Ghana; well one thing did happen, it's Pacquiao winning the fight.

I predicted that Pacquiao will finish off Clottey sometime between the 7th-10th round but the fight had, rather, ended up to the distance and will go to the scorecards. It was a one-sided victory of the Filipino pound-for-pound champion as he had won all 12 rounds. From the opening bell, Pacman outworked Clottey in every round. Pacquiao outpunched Clottey at a 3:1 clip as the Ghanian spent long periods with his guard up and seemed to be more interested in surviving than winning.

Nevertheless, Pacquiao again proved to the world that he is really the king of boxing now. Congratulations!

The Event was held in front of 50,994 at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The EVENT is near

Twelve days to go and yet, still, I can't wait for it to happen. The Event will definitely happen; championship fight between pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Joshua Clottey, as I've said before, will be an exciting fight to see. Coming from the Dallas Cowboys' stadium, on the 13th of this month, who wouldn't watch? Mayweather fans?

Will Pacquiao be victorious again?

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao has won his last 11 fights, had achieved a record-breaking seven titles in different weight classes, has been named by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) as 2009 fighter of the year, has been named 'fighter of the decade' also by the BWAA, had pursed millions of dollars; would there be more for the Filipino pride?

Pacquiao is set to fight Ghana native, Joshua Clottey, this coming March 13 at the Dallas Cowboy's Stadium in Texas and [definitely] a lot of people will be waiting for 'The Event'; much ado about the now 'theoretical' Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Setting aside his political aspirations, will the Pacman be victorious against Clottey as he continue his journey to total greatness?

I have a feeling that Pacquiao will win this fight but not the easy way though. I'm not underestimating Clottey for he got the strength and stamina that could go the distance, there is also a chance that he could make my prediction wrong. Joshua might be the bigger man but Manny would have the power and speed along with stamina; he could be the last man standing on that ring.

Pacquiao: Fighter of the Year | Figher of the Decade

Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, the pound-for-pound king who had just made a record-breaking achievement by being a champion in 7 weight classes, has been named by the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) as 2009 fighter of the year. Pacquiao will be presented with his third Sugar Ray Robinson trophy on the 11th of June at the 85th annual banquet of BWAA in New York.

The Pacman had achieved his welterweight title by stopping Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto in the 12th round during their Nov. 14 fight last year. Prior to that, he won the world junior-welterweight by scoring a devastating second-round knockout of Ricky Hatton. Pacquiao's career record is 50W(38KOs)-3L-2D and hoping to add more victory by his upcoming March 13 fight against Joshua Clottey.

The Filipino boxing hero, who was also named 2009 fighter of the year by Ring Magazine and ESPN.com, was also voted as the fighter of the decade (2000-09) in a star-studded pool of great boxers nominated. The nominated group was graced by the names of Bernard hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Juan Manuel Marquez, Joe Calzaghe, Shane Mosley and Marco Antonio Barrera. Manny Pacquiao had set 24W-1L-2D during the decade and won six world titles. He's also now recognized as the pound-for-pound king and a box office sensation.

Clottey not Mayweather?

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still pushing for a mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao, but key people around Pacquiao said Friday the Filipino star fighter's focus has shifted to a replacement foe, Joshua Clottey.

"If you concede to whatever Mayweather wants, that's giving him an edge," Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach said Friday. "We're bigger than Mayweather. We don't need him. We don't work for him.

"So, the way I feel now, we'll go fight Clottey, then we'll fight the winner of [Shane] Mosley and [Andre] Berto."

Welterweight Clottey (35-3) lost a close 2009 fight to Miguel Cotto, who was subsequently defeated by Pacquiao via a 12th-round technical knockout in November.

"It'll be a tough fight, not an easy fight, but better than some of the other names that were being thrown around," Roach said.

Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum went so far as saying he expects both fighters to verbally approve contracts sent to them in the Philippines and Africa, respectively. Arum will also tour Dallas Cowboys Stadium today, saying he expects to put Pacquiao-Clottey there March 13.

Behind the scenes, however, there is still movement in the Pacquiao and Mayweather camps to try to bridge the dividing line in their negotiations over when pre-fight random blood tests for performance-enhancing drugs should stop.

Pacquiao agreed to a blood test 24 days before a Mayweather bout planned for March 13 in Las Vegas, and another sample immediately after the bout. Mayweather wants the final blood test to come 14 days before the fight. "Isn't that reasonable?" asked Mayweather promoter, Richard Schaefer.

So there is a push to pitch Mayweather's blood test plan to Pacquiao once more before he arrives back in the U.S. to begin training Monday at Roach's Hollywood gym. Roach also said, "Mayweather can still say he's OK with the 24 days, and the fight's back on, right?"

That's not the case, according to Arum. "We have moved on," he said.

Schaefer is urging Mayweather-Pacquiao talks to continue, admitting a deal needs to be struck soon because of training schedules.

Arum's response: "He wants talks to continue. Who is he going to be talking to?"

War between 2 giants!

The March 13 fight between Manny Pacquaio and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still hanging on a cliff, it might go down the drain. On the other hand, Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions are going to sit down with an arbitrator, break bread, and hopefully finalize the mega-fight of the century.

Though millions of boxing fans across the globe hope that a bout will be sign, sealed, and delivered for March 13, I know a few people who will cross their fingers and toes hoping the bout completely falls apart.

Paulie Malignaggi and Yuri Foreman have both been mentioned as possible opponents to replace Floyd and make the payday of their careers.

Do you think Paulie and Yuri are wishing they were flies on the wall of the office where this power meeting will take place?

Sure Malignaggi might think Pacquiao is a cheat, but that will not keep him from fighting the Filipino and while making a million dollars or two. Imagine all of the artificial braids and waxing creams Paulie can purchase with that sort of loot?

Foreman might have no pop in his fists, but he is a like-able lad and holds a title which could prove to be Pacquiao's eighth in eight divisions. Nobody said Pacquiao was looking for quality in the quantity of his crowns. Foreman vs. Pacquiao? The average Joe might think Big George is coming back out of retirement.

Make a good deal Mayweather

Now that the Pacquiao-Mayweather is in danger and it might be flushed down the drain because of the controversial random blood-testing prior to the fight, as proposed by the camp of Floyd Mayweather Jr., there are several other options that could happen. There have been talks that both camps are considering Shane Mosley to be the next opponent, a very possible option. Also the camp of Pound-for-Pound champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao might be considering Paulie Malignaggi; while on the other hand, Mayweather is also considering Matthew Hatton (brother of Ricky Hatton) to be his next opponent.

March 2010 could be the possible date for the Pacquiao-Mayweather mega-fight but due to this drug-testing controversies there is a slight chance that the bout will take place. Mayweather's camp wants random blood-testing and urninaylsis; Pacquiao's has agreed to the urinalysis, but not to the random blood-testing. After all, Mayweather camp seems like they are still making negotiations. Well better make it a good deal.

Mayweather's camp update their terms

It appears the Floyd Mayweather Camp is open to a compromise on their demand of random blood testing. “As long as there’s a blood test, as long as there’s a urine test and as long as it’s random, a cutoff date is agreeable to us,” Mayweather’s representative Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy Promotions told the LA Times Saturday. Meanwhile, Pacquiao wrote on his blog “I am still willing to Fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. I never said the fight was off or I do not want to fight him. I will fight anyone at anytime and my record and past fights prove that. I have never and will never dodge anyone. These are my specifications for this fight regarding blood testing. I have offered to give a blood sample the day of the announcement of the fight at the press [conference]. I have offered to give a blood sample 30 days before the fight. I am willing to give blood immediately after the fight is over inside my dressing room . I am also willing to give urine tests at anytime any where everyday leading up to the fight. The truth is taking blood out of my body does not seem natural to me and mentally I feel it will weaken me if blood is taken from me just days before the fight. That does not make sense to me why anyone would do that.”

Pacquiao-Mayweather: Duckers!

Calling off the supposedly fight of the century between Pound-for-Pound Champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and Pound-for-Pound #2 Floyd Mayweather Jr. is not what most people would want it to be. We would definitely want the fight to go on no matter where it will take place. The location of the match would matter less to us, it can be done in Las Vegas or in Dallas, anywhere would do. Just get it on.

For the Mayweather camp, are you not satisfied with the drug tests being done by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for you are still wanting more? The Olympic style blood testing would have been good but to get blood samples from boxers just days before the fight is very much questionable. For me, the suggestions of Bob Arum about NFL-type of tests would be acceptable; go for it.

Now that Arum, [unofficially] calls it off, is saying that Pacquiao should move on and look for other opponents Golden Boy Promotions had some counters too; Richard Schaefer discloses that there will be no Golden Boy boxers to fight the Pacman.

One question in my mind would be "Who's ducking who?"

Money May has been claimed by many boxing fans and critics that he had been ducking some potential great fighters before; Shane Mosley, Paul Williams, and even Miguel Cotto. Was it all about the money and easy fights? Or is he just a ducker?

Well, it's all mind games. Maybe Mayweather Jr., doesn't really have the intention (that is if he's not afraid) to fight Pacquiao and just want to create a stir in the boxing world; setup a very questionable terms for blood tests so that the other fighter would opt out and in that sense he would inject the minds of the many that he's not the ducker. Floyd is one great strategist in or out the boxing ring no questions about that.

This is not what we, boxing fans, would want to happen for these two great fighters. We would definitely want them to face each other inside that boxing ring and prove who really is the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. So for both camps, please make it happen.

Pacquiao-Mayweather Off?

Seven-time world champion Manny Pacquiao has merely laughed off the drug testing issue being raised by Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s saying that the former pound-for-pound king is just trying to excuse himself from the fight.

“Marami lang siyang dahilan, marami siyang dinedemand. Siguro wala pa ‘yong fight, takot na,” said Pacquiao.

The Filipino champion, who recently won the World Boxing Organization welterweight title from Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto, said Mayweather maybe getting nervous with the idea of trading punches with him.

Thus, American boxer came out with a statement demanding an Olympic-type of dope testing.

“Sa akin walang problema kung gusto niyang lumaban. Fight kaming dalawa... pero kung medyo natakot siya -- palakasin muna niya loob niya,” said Pacquiao.

Pacquiao made it clear he has no qualm in undergoing tests. What he’s opposed against is having him to give blood so near the March 13 fight date.

“Require natin lahat pati blood test... pero ‘wag naman doon sa day of the fight, manghihina ka naman noon,” he said.

The Filipino boxing star added that the Mayweather camp may also be using the issue to just to distract him.

“Gumagawa lang siya ng paraan, strategy niya para magalit ako... para ma-distract ako sa concentration sa fight,” said the reigning pound-for-pound king.

Arum: Mayweather-Pacquiao fight can be salvaged

Boxing promoter Bob Arum on Thursday told this newspaper there is one way the proposed fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. can be salvaged.

"Get rid of USADA, bring in one of the agencies that do the NFL and NBA and we'll tell them what kind of testing we want and they will do it for us and the fight will go on," said Arum, Pacquiao's promoter.

If not, Pacquiao will move on.

Arum said he already has reached out to Paul Malignaggi's promoter, Lou Dibella, about Malignaggi replacing Mayweather for the March 13 fight at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

"Lou wants the fight, but he has to get a hold of Malignaggi, who is with his family for Christmas Eve," Arum said.

Malignaggi is the former junior welterweight champion from Brooklyn.

Meanwhile, junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley of Palm Springs has thrown his name into the mix. He said he won't ask Pacquiao to do any testing other than that already provided by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. It consists of a urine test before and after a fight - sometimes, but rarely, during training.

"I feel I'm more than ready for Manny Pacquiao," Bradley said Thursday. "I would not require no (other) drug testing. Manny Pacquiao ain't doing drugs, man. He is just on top of his game."

Pacquiao-Mayweather was expected to be formally announced any day.

But earlier this week the Mayweather camp, represented by Golden Boy Promotions, told Pacquiao's camp there would be no deal unless Pacquiao agreed to submit to Olympic-style drug-testing provided by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

That would require eight to 12 urine samples and three to five blood samples that could be taken at random during the promotion.

Pacquiao never has tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and has fought 11 times in Las Vegas. But Floyd Mayweather Sr. has gone on record as saying he believes Pacquiao, who has had success in seven weight classes, is using them.

"Manny is not opposed to testing. He just doesn't want to do blood right before the fight," Arum said. "We have never been against drug testing, we have been against drug testing close to the fight.

"Athletes around the world have complained that this blood testing close to the event really affects their performance."

Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy, said he is trying to save the fight. Arum said he would agree to a system that would require no more than three blood tests - one in early January, one 30 days before the fight and one directly after.

Freddie Roach, Pacquiao's trainer, said he would consider a blood test as close as five days before the fight but no closer.

Schaefer was told about Arum reaching out to DiBella.

"I guess he is going to do what he is going to do," Schaefer said. "But I don't give up easily. I still think we owe it to the sport and owe it to the fans to get this thing done."

Pacquiao-Mayweather may not happen!

The proposed megafight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. was thrown into jeopardy Tuesday with a demand by Mayweather's camp that both fighters be subjected to Olympic-type drug testing in the weeks leading up to the bout.

Mayweather's manager said the fight would not go on if Pacquiao didn't agree to blood testing under standards followed by the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

"There is no fight without Olympic-style random drug testing," Leonard Ellerbe said.

Mayweather's camp claims it was told Pacquiao would not agree to have his blood tested within 30 days of the fight because of personal superstitions. But Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, said he could live with some testing, as long as it wasn't too close to the fight and wasn't overly intrusive.

"I will not let my fighter take a blood test the day before a fight," Roach said. "If they give me a five-day window or something like that I have no problem with it."

Roach said he hoped the issue wasn't brought up as a way to get Mayweather out of the fight.

"He's looking for a back door out," Roach said. "We're eager to fight."

The fight, which promises to be the richest ever, had widely been expected to be formalized this week, with an official announcement Jan. 6. It was expected to be held at the MGM Grand hotel, with the biggest live gate ever.

But neither fighter has signed formal contracts and there have been disputes between representatives of the two fighters ever since Mayweather's promoter pulled out at the last minute of a trip to Texas, where Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was to make a proposal to host the bout.

But Mayweather's promoter, Richard Schaefer, said all other issues have been agreed upon.

"The good news is we have agreed on all the other points," Schaefer said. "Depending on what Manny Pacquiao decides to do we either have a fight or we don't have a fight."

Schaefer said he is still hopeful of the fight happening, based on the fact Pacquiao himself has not publicly said he would not accept blood testing.

"I am still hopeful because I really believe this decision didn't come from Manny Pacquiao, it came from somebody else," Schaefer said. "It's up to Manny Pacquiao to prove me right or wrong." Read more...

Zab Judah is uncertain for Pacquiao

Former undisputed welterweight champion Zab Judah had commented about the upcoming mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao next year. "If Floyd is going to fight the way he's supposed to fight then it would be an easy night for him," the former champ said. Well, Judah was defeated by Mayweather the last time they cross path. Zab claimed that Floyd is a great defensive fighter [which he is] and that the Pacman would have the hard time running to him and land those punches; he claimed that Pacquiao could not land those same punches that hit De La Hoya, Hatton and Cotto. "We're going to find out if Pacquiao is really the truth," Zab added.

Lewis: Pacquiao can hand Mayweather his first loss

International Boxing Hall of Fame inductee Lennox Lewis said it is possible for seven-division champion Manny Pacquiao to hand Floyd Mayweather, Jr. his first career loss when they clash next year.

Lewis, a former heavyweight champion, thinks that WBO welterweight champion Pacquiao (50-3-2, with 38 knockouts) can probably match the “amazing” speed and defense of the undefeated Mayweather (40-0, 25 KOs).

“I'd say that Manny is one of two guys who have a chance to beat Floyd,” Lewis told Michael Marley of Examiner.com.

The other fighter is WBA welterweight super champion Shane Mosley, he noted. “I can't think of anybody else who could even possibly beat Mayweather,” commented Lewis whose professional record was 41-2-1 (with 32 KOs).

As for the Pacquiao-Mayweather clash, Lewis commented: “It should be a great thing for boxing when he [Mayweather] and Pacquiao fight.”

The Pacquiao-Mayweather fight, which is set to take place on March 13, will be officially announced on January in a press conference in the United States.
